Description
Gaining entry into Glacier National Park’s Hole in the Wall was only supposed to be a scouting trip, a precursor to the 1000-mile winter trip along Montana’s portion of the Continental Divide.
Never mind that Park employees said it was inaccessible, that no one had ever entered it during the winter.
Nor was 2011 the right year to make the attempt. It was a banner year for snowpack, a La Niña winter, and 200% above normal snowpack, interspersed with harsh arctic cold.
Then came the thundering avalanches, the falls and hanging upside down, and finally the horrifying realization during the final trip on alternative ways to die, continuing forward or to exit.
