On Elk Summit road and ascending Savage Pass, Clearwater National Forest.

After more than two weeks of single digit and subzero temperatures, I noted sardonically the sun was beginning to warm the south face ridge up to freezing. This was my fifteenth day in a crossing of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho and Montana. I did not know at the time, but I would arrive the following day at Lochsa Lodge on Highway 12.

I would return 10 days later with a replacement set of snowshoes and continue the trip that would end nearly 100 miles south of Savage Pass.
