Winter view of Chief Mountain in Glacier National Park

Description

In Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Nation, Chief Mountain (9,089 feet) emerged from a two-day snowstorm. The warm moisture in the cloud around the mountain was being pushed south by an intensifying Arctic cold that would almost take my life 36 hours later.

I was singing when I took this photo. Less than two hours later, with the temperature again dropping below zero degrees Fahrenheit, I would break through the ice on Belly River. When I stopped for the final time, it was one and one half hours later and mid-afternoon. The temperature was approximately 10 degrees below zero and still falling.
